Patrick Mahomes’ Erased Touchdown Draws Blunt Reaction From Former Chiefs Head Coach

· Yahoo Sports

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns against the Denver Broncos. He spread the ball to nine pass-catchers, but Kansas City lost 28-24 after Denver rallied in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs had one final chance at the Broncos’ 1-yard line. A late false-start call against right tackle Jaylon Moore erased Mahomes’ apparent touchdown pass to Rashee Rice, and Denver ended the game with a sack on the next snap.

Hall of Fame coach Dick Vermeil questioned the decision on Starcade Media: “When they showed the replays, I couldn’t see him move, or if he did, you know. But determining the outcome of a football game by something like that frustrates me. It really does. And I can imagine how Andy and the team feel. Yes, you shouldn’t move at all. But my god, was it a glaring move? Was it a move to gain advantage? I don’t know. I think we’re being a little bit over-officiated this year.”

The call came with four seconds left after Mahomes found Rice for a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down. Officials stopped the play for a false start, and Denver defensive tackle Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on the final snap.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he did not see a false start on Moore. “I didn’t see it, but that’s one man’s opinion. I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see a false start,” Reid said after the game. Moore also appeared to twitch his right foot before the snap, and he accepted responsibility for improving the play.

The officiating issue came in a game filled with Kansas City mistakes. The Chiefs committed 11 penalties for 105 yards, both season highs. Denver had six penalties for 45 yards.

Kansas City led 24-13 through three quarters. Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, and Denver scored twice in the final 8:55 to take the lead.

Mahomes’ touchdowns went to Rice, rookie Emmett Johnson and tight end Noah Gray. Johnson caught five passes for 128 yards, including a 73-yard score. Rice finished with seven receptions for 53 yards.

The loss dropped the Chiefs to 5–2 and marked their second straight defeat. Denver moved to 6-2 and took the AFC West lead. Kansas City will host the New York Jets next Sunday.
