LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is once again in the news after he rehired Ed Orgeron to his coaching staff. Orgeron will serve as special assistant to recruiting and defense, said Kiffin.

Orgeron was LSU’s head coach for nearly six years. In 2019, he led the Tigers to the national championship with a 15-0 mark. He departed after the 2021 season. Previously, Kiffin and Orgeron worked together at both the University of Southern California and the University of Tennessee. Therefore, the hiring makes sense as Kiffin is assumed to be in good terms with the former LSU head coach.

“I’m excited to bring Coach Orgeron back to LSU,” Kiffin said. “He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, but especially the impact he can have for us recruiting the great state of Louisiana. Coach O understands my expectations and commitment to being a championship program. I look forward to seeing him with recruits and his intensity working with our defensive players.”

LSU fans shared their reactions to this update.

“Coach O has never been a college coach when you could legally pay players. Buckle up!” one fan shared his doubts on this rehiring.

“Ed O and Lane Kiffin together again… This time it’s in Baton Rouge,” one fan commented.

“Brent Pry is the DC at VT and Coach O is back on staff at LSU. Big year for fired coaches familiar with the area,” one fan noted.

“Paid him 17 million to leave only for him to be back in 5 years lmaoooo,” one fan said.

“2 coaches that were told to GTFO of Oxford,” one fan joked.

“Orgeron is the third former #LSU head coach to return to the school in recent months. First Will Wade, then Johnny Jones and now Ed Orgeron,” one fan commented.

Why LSU’s Lane Kiffin Decided to Bring Back Ed Orgeron

After more than a decade, Ed Orgeron and Lane Kiffin have come back together. The duo have been friends and have even worked together in the past, first serving together in 2001 under USC head coach Pete Carroll. At the time, Orgeron played an integral role in the Trojans’ rise.

Moreover, at LSU, his recruiting was even chronicled in the book “Meat Market.” LSU named him as interim head coach in 2016. He delivered a national championship but just two years later, he was fired over poor results. Combined, his overall record at LSU was 51-20.

The reason behind rehiring is simple. Orgeron has been finding talent in LSU for more than a decade and knows the state all too well now, given his stints at Northwestern State, McNeese, Nicholls State and even a season coaching the defensive line for the New Orleans Saints. As such, Kiffin would like to maximize on Orgeron’s recruiting knowledge and deliver top-rated recruiting classes year after year.
