Things were going great for Canada in its second 2026 World Cup match on Thursday, cruising toward a needed victory against Qatar — but a significant injury put a damper on things.
While holding a 3-0 advantage around the 52nd minute, Ismael Kone went down with an injury that required a long stoppage as he remained lying on the pitch.
On a play that resulted in a red card for Qatar's Assim Madibo, Kane suffered a gruesome leg injury that also put Qatar down two players in a rough performance.

Ismael Kone injury update
Canada was already up 3-0 by the early portion of the second half on Thursday, well on its way to its first 2026 World Cup win, but looking to extend its lead for standings purposes.
After receiving a pass, then attempting to dribble out of Madibo's defense, however, Kone wound up falling to the pitch after Madibo's leg caught Kone's in an attempt to move the ball out from behind the Canada player.
Between Madibo's kick and the way Kone then fell down, he immediately started grabbing at his lower left leg, and players reacted to his gruesome injury in the moments afterward.

The match came to a halt afterward — Kone needed length medical attention, while Madibo was given a red card, Qatar's second, to put his team down to nine players. Canada's players and coaches were also visibly angry after the tackle.
Kone's leg was put in an air cast and he was eventually was put on a stretcher and waved to the crowd as he left the match.

Madibo also appeared to be in disbelief, needing comfort from his teammates

However, Canada's replacement for Kone, Nathan Saliba, scored shortly after the match resumed — and he honored his teammate afterward.
