Lenny Harris, ex-Reds pinch-hit king, gets World Cup broadcast mention

The TV audience watching the FIFA World Cup round of 16 match between Switzerland and Colombia likely didn't expect to hear former Cincinnati Reds fan favorite and current Daytona Tortugas bench coach Lenny Harris' name, but Fox analyst Darren Fletcher mentioned it during the 89th minute of the broadcast.

"Do you know the man who's regarded as the greatest ever pinch-hitter in the history of baseball?" Fletcher asked. "It's a guy called Lenny Harris. Had 212 pinch-hits."

Harris started his 18-season MLB career with the Reds in 1988. He set an MLB record with 212 pinch-hits for eight teams.

In 2014, Harris told members of the former Green Diamond Gallery in Montgomery that it was crucial for him as a pinch-hitter to stay loose during the game.

"I would have other players soft-toss to me in the cage," Harris said at Green Diamond. "I would also wear sleeves to stay warm, even in hot weather. I would even hit balls into other players' lockers and break everything to get myself motivated to pinch-hit."

Harris, Cincinnati's fifth-round pick in the 1983 MLB Draft, played for the Reds in 1988 and 1989, and again from 1994 to 1998.
