Dodgers Dubbed Deadline Winners After Tarik Skubal Blockbuster

Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden named the Los Angeles Dodgers the winners of the trade deadline following their aggressive moves to strengthen their team.
The Dodgers, of course, added the best player available in Tarik Skubal, and also addressed some immediate needs by acquiring catchers Ben Rortvedt and Hunter Feduccia, both of whom played for the team in the past. To put the cherry on top, the Dodgers acquired All-Star left-hander Kris Bubic from the Kansas City Royals.

“The Dodgers won the trade deadline, acquiring Skubal from the Tigers in a fair market trade of prospects for a rental,” Bowden wrote. “The Dodgers were the favorites to win their third straight title before the trade and now become even heavier favorites to achieve a three-peat. It was incredible they were able to consummate the deal two days before the deadline and didn’t have to add a fourth prospect in the trade.”
In exchange for those four players, the Dodgers traded four prospects and two veterans who weren’t likely to make it onto the roster.
River Ryan, Zyhir Hope and Brady Smith were the return for Skubal. The trade gives Ryan an opportunity to shine in an organization after struggling to break into the Dodgers’ All-Star-laden ranks, and also attaches two talented prospects who play positions in which the Dodgers don’t especially need help.
Both Rortvedt and Feduccia came cheap, as the Dodgers traded Chayce McDermott—who they designated for assignment July 31—for the former and unloaded minor league outfielder Jack Suwinski for Hunter Feduccia of the Tampa Bay Rays, who replaced him with catcher Liam Hicks.
Finally, the Dodgers freed up a 40-man roster spot by trading reliever Carlos Duran—who has just one MLB appearance to his name—to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Bubic, who is currently on the injured list with an elbow problem.
On top of his shining review of the Dodgers’ deadline activities, Bowden granted them an “A+” grade for their business.

Skubal won’t have to wait long for his Dodgers debut, as he is set to take the mound in the Dodgers’ second game against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Skubal will look to break the Dodgers out of a four-game skid, aiming to endear himself to his new fanbase.
On the year, Skubal has a 2.79 ERA through 16 starts, striking out 116 batters in 96.2 innings pitched, and has been solid since returning from a procedure on his elbow during the season. Over his last five starts, Skubal has a 2.03 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 31 innings.
The Dodgers’ game against the Cubs Tuesday begins at 5:05 p.m. PT.
