The president of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump, headlined the Republican National Committee’s inaugural two-day midterm convention, which was held at the Dallas Mavericks’ home, American Airlines Center. Trump then took some time to talk hoops during his speech — with the Mavericks’ controversial decision to trade Luka Doncic away to the Los Angeles Lakers being one of his talking points.

Trump said that the Doncic trade could “go down as the worst trade in the history of sports”.

“This is a big Dallas Mavericks team, which is going to be hopefully good. I must tell you, I don’t understand the trade. That trade is not — what do I know about basketball? I would say it’s not going to go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. It might go down as the worst trade in the history of sports,” Trump said, via Courtside Buzz on X.

The Boston Red Sox caught a stray during the president’s ramblings regarding the Mavericks and Lakers’ trade involving Doncic back in February 2025 — with Trump declaring the Red Sox’s decision to trade the late great Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for essentially a bag of chips still standing out as the worst trade in the history of sports, at least in his book.

“You know the worst trade in the history of sports, right? The great Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth, 19-year old pitcher, for a 36 year old third baseman and $100,000. At that time that was like $10 million I guess, because Boston needed money. So Babe will always be the worst trade,” Trump added.

Nonetheless, Trump hammered home the point that he still does not get why the Mavericks would do that trade, and if he had the power to do so, he would allow Dallas to take back that deal they had with the Lakers.

“That’s not a good – that wasn’t good. Maybe we could redo that trade. I redo deals all the time. We gotta redo that deal. I don’t get that deal.”

The Mavericks traded Doncic away due to former general manager Nico Harrison’s concerns regarding Doncic’s long-term health amid concerns regarding his calf injury at the time. Dallas believed that giving him a supermax contract would be a mistake, and they got out from having to make that decision by trading him away — with the Lakers welcoming Doncic with loving arms.

Doncic, in 92 games thus far in his Lakers career, is averaging 31.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per contest.
