We try every year not to overreact to Week 1 for any team in the NFL. Are the Chicago Bears going to average 59 points a game? No. Are the Carolina Panthers going to give up 59 points a game? No. Can I think of more ways to remind you that the Panthers lost Week 1 by surrendering a franchise record 59 points in a single game? Probably later.

For now, I want to focus on the positives. The Panthers scored 37 points of their own, including staying tied with the Bears at 31 points through about the middle of the third quarter. That’s an offensive output well beyond expectations against a defense that was not playing with an aggressive lead until the fourth quarter.
This is not what we have come to expect from a team led by Dave Canales and Bryce Young. Whether or not that can be attributed to a level up from Young or the influence of Brad Idzik calling plays is yet to be determined. Whether or not that was simply a flash in the pan or the sign of things to come is the first question to assess. So that’s where we are starting with y’all this week.
