Things have gone from bad to worse for the Boston Red Sox after Tuesday night’s 9-0 Game 1 loss to the New York Yankees as manager Chad Tracy told reporters ahead of Wednesday night’s Game 2 that 22-year-old outfielder Roman Anthony was sent back to Boston after exiting Tuesday’s loss with a right-hand injury.

“We actually sent him back to Boston last evening to get there early in the morning and re-image, which showed additional damage to some muscles in his wrist that weren't there before," Tracy told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. "It's enough there that we're not going to have him," he continued.

After going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, Anthony mysteriously departed Tuesday night's loss in the sixth inning, getting pinch-hit for by utility man Andruw Monasterio. After the game, "The hand- he took a check swing, and then another swing, and the hand flared on him,” Tracy said after the loss

With their season on the line on Wednesday night, the loss of Anthony could be a death knell for the 2026 Red Sox. After missing 101 games with a torn ligament in his right hand, Anthony was one of the few players producing in a Boston lineup that scored the fewest runs in baseball by a wide margin in September. After returning to the lineup on Aug. 30, Anthony hit .262/.321/.476/.797 in 25 games, stabilizing a leadoff spot that had been a black hole in the Boston lineup for much of the season.

After submitting a petition to Major League Baseball, Anthony has been removed from the postseason roster, keeping him out of the lineup for the remainder of the Wild Card series and the divisional round, should they advance. Anthony has been replaced on the roster by infielder Curtis Mead.

The 25-year-old infielder will return to the active roster after missing the final two months of the regular season after being hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance in a Red Sox uniform on July 27, breaking his wrist and ending his regular season. Before being dealt to Boston in exchange for starter Connelly Early, Mead hit .256/.351/.505/.856 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI in 86 games for the Washington Nationals.

Mead will not be in the lineup in Wednesday night's must-win Game 2.

Up next for the Sox

The Red Sox will look to keep their season alive in Game 2 of the best-of-three series from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. Sonny Gray (18-5, 2.72 ERA) will get the start against his former team opposite veteran left-hander Max Fried (5-5, 2.80 ERA), who will take the mound for New York. First pitch is set for 8:15 p.m. ET.
