The left-winger missed the remainder of last season after suffering a significant injury, but he has returned strongly and is now attracting increased attention. De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij believes PSV could eventually demand as much as €80 million for the 22-year-old.
Speaking on the Kick-off podcast, Verweij argued that a €60 million valuation would already be too low.
“€60m Is Far Too Little”: Mike Verweij Predicts Record Ruben van Bommel TransferAfter a dazzling international debut, the PSV winger’s skyrocketing valuation could eclipse past legends as experts predict a historic bidding war for the Netherlands’ newest breakout star.“60 million euros is far too little; he’s going for 80 million at PSV, I think. I think he has more conditions than Gakpo. I think he’ll get even better than Gakpo.”
Former coach Gertjan Verbeek believes Van Bommel possesses the qualities required to succeed in the Premier League, although he warned that placing an €80 million valuation on the youngster could create unnecessary pressure.
“It puts unnecessary pressure on him, but that kid does have all the qualities that make him very suitable for the English competition.”
Verbeek also pointed to the spending power of Premier League clubs, suggesting that a major transfer fee cannot be ruled out if Van Bommel continues his current development.
“In that league, those kinds of amounts are very easily put on the table.”
‘Nice, Fantastic’: Dutch Legend Wesley Sneijder Reveals What Impressed Him Most About PSV’s Ruben van BommelThe legendary midfielder lauds the PSV winger’s fearless composure and tactical intelligence following a sensational international debut defined by a match-saving assist against heavyweights Germany.Verbeek used Antony’s move from Ajax to Manchester United as an example of the transfer fees that can be paid for attacking players.
“Antony from Ajax once went to Manchester United for 100 million euros, so if clubs of that kind start showing interest, then amounts like that are more than logical for players of that type.”
However, Verbeek stressed that Van Bommel still has plenty to prove.
“But one beautiful spring day is not yet summer. In the long run, we still have to see, but at the moment he is doing very well.”
The former Feyenoord and AZ coach was particularly impressed by the winger’s response to his lengthy injury absence.
“He has returned very fast and strong from a serious injury.”
As relayed by PSV Inside, Verbeek also highlighted Van Bommel’s mentality, physical development and performances against top opposition.
“If you look at how he scores his goals, at his acceleration, and at how he stands his ground in physical duels, then he has certainly made a big step since he went from AZ to PSV.”
The winger’s assist for Cody Gakpo against Germany for the Netherlands also demonstrated his technical quality, according to Verbeek.
“The ball he played against Germany also showed great kicking technique.”
Van Bommel’s performances are now drawing greater attention from opponents, something Verbeek believes will provide another test of his development.
“He makes a name for himself, and that also means that opponents will start keeping an eye on him. There will be double coverage and the next step is to deal with that.”
For now, Verbeek believes the PSV winger is progressing well, while the possibility of a major future transfer fee remains dependent on how he develops from here.
